Kallos Candle Company creates artisanal and sustainable candles inspired by antiquity. Each candle–whether sculptural (molded like ancient columns, statues, and forms) or scented jars (inspired by the flavors of the Mediterranean)– is handcrafted from non-toxic materials, designed to elevate your space without compromising wellbeing.
My job was to formalize their visual identity and develop their brand strategy, which ultimately included renaming the business. The core challenge was clear: Kallos candles are both luxury objects and ethical choices, art and function. I realized we needed to craft a narrative framework that went beyond simple aesthetic appeal–something that would resonate with an audience seeking meaning and intentionality alongside beauty.
The breakthrough came when I remembered my old college philosophy courses. The name "Kallos" (meaning "beauty" in ancient Greek) unlocked a deeper concept: to the ancients, true beauty required being virtuous in form and virtuous in function. Kallos candles are the perfect example of this, marrying beautiful forms (sculptural, classical design) to high-quality function (sustainably sourced non-toxic materials). With a single word we had found the brand's core philosophy and narrative framework, and after that, the visual identity almost built itself.
The creative direction became old world sophistication meets artisanal handcraft. An elegant, wide serif evokes classical inscriptions, while hand-drawn details and a simple monospaced sans-serif reference the brand's personal touch. The modular logo system adapts across candle jars, packaging, and digital platforms. Neutral creams and browns offset by pops of Aether blue and Helios yellow invoke a clean, airy luminosity. A stylized sun with curving rays inspired by ancient reliefs ties the visual language to classical imagery while maintaining contemporary simplicity. Each choice reinforces the core ethos: form and function in perfect balance, classical inspiration refined for modern life.
