CHRIST THE REDEEMER

The first thing the Rector of Christ the Redeemer (CTR) Anglican Church told me about his parish was that they refer to themselves as "aggressively hospitable." I said, "I can work with that."

CTR is a vibrant, growing Anglican Church in Norfolk, VA. As they prepared to move into a new worship space in a new neighborhood, it was the perfect moment to refresh their visual identity. Grounded in CTR's core values of hospitality, worship, and community, we developed a new brand strategy, visual identity, and website.

CTR's creative challenge was a balancing act. Anglicanism is a rich, tradition-steeped faith with its own language and customs–something meaningful to insiders, but potentially intimidating to newcomers. At the same time, CTR is deeply committed to hospitality and wants people to immediately feel at home. The brand needed to feel historic and substantive without being exclusive or stuffy. The website needed to do the same, acting almost as a welcome guide that explains what to expect at CTR, what Anglicanism is all about, and how to get involved. The primary goal here was to create an inviting portrait of the life of the church.

When it came to the creative direction, I leaned into the future/past nature of Anglicanism. Typographically, I chose modern interpretations of traditional typefaces (a glyphic serif and italicized serif). The logo mark is a Jerusalem Cross, the central motif of the Global Anglican Communion, with the same line weights as the glyphic logo font. A traditional shade of red anchors the color palette, but I incorporated contrasting cool tones to add unexpected nuance. The result is a balance of historic and modern, accessible and substantive, rooted but never stuffy. CTR now has a cohesive identity that tells their story and opens the door to anyone looking for a place to belong.
